Chennai Super Kings, a team which has never failed to make it to the playoffs has disappointed this year. It was a very disappointing tournament for them, given their standards. The Super Kings need some changes to get back their prime best. Let us see what are the new names CSK need to buy in the next auction:
Lack of a Solid Number 3 Batsman:
With the absence of Suresh Raina, CSK struggled to find a good batsman at number 3. They were missing their premier batsman throughout this season. With the absence of their gun batsman, CSK had chopped and changed their number 3 batsman. In the first few matches, they had played Faf du Plessis at number 3 and when the openers performed inconsistently, Rayudu was forced to come at No.3 and Faf was promoted to open the innings. Then, Sam Curran was promoted to open the batting, Watson was brought back at number 3. This clearly shows that CSK lacks a prominent number 3 batsman.
CSK will most likely retain its premier batsman, Suresh Raina. But if they to do so, these are the batsmen they need to buy in the auction :
Dawid Malan stands at first in the T20I rankings and he’s a batsman who could resolve CSK’s problems at number 3. Apart from his sensational consistency in the shortest format of the game, his strike rate too is just phenomenal. He is someone who could repair the innings once there is a collapse.Embed from Getty Images
The aggression which was lacking for most of the tournament could be handled by Malan. He could also be considered as a long term replacement for CSK as their number 3 batsman. But can he replicate his consistency at the spinning wickets of Chepauk? If CSK buys Dawid Malan, he could be used as an explosive batsman as well as a sheet anchor. The perfect choice for a batsman at number 3 for the Super Kings, but the question is will the Super Kings take his great form into consideration going into the auction?
If CSK can’t buy Malan, then their second choice of a batter at number 3 would be Joe Root. One of the members of the Fab 4, Joe Root has been pretty decent for England in the shortest format of the game. He has been quite successful in Indian conditions, and in the 2016 T20 World Cup held in India, he was the third-highest run-getter.Embed from Getty Images
Someone like him could just control the innings at a fall of a wicket. Like Malan, Root is a player who can play the sheet anchor role which is needed for CSK. Joe Root could also be used as a captain after their old gun, MS Dhoni retires from IPL. Overall, he’s a great package as a T20 batsman.
The spinners who usually fire for the Super Kings have been a total let down this season. Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja were highly inconsistent with the ball this season. Karn Sharma has blown hot and cold while Tahir and Santner hardly got opportunities to prove themselves. So, which player they have to buy to fill the gap in the spin department?
The Aussie leg spinner will most likely be released by RCB after the spinners in RCB bowling performing well. So, CSK could go or him. His track record in T20s has been exceptional with a bowling average of 22 and a sensational strike rate of 18!!!Embed from Getty Images
He also has done well in the IPL for the Supergiants. He is also one of three bowlers who have picked six wickets in a single match in the IPL. It could be well said that Zampa is pretty accustomed to bowl in the Indian conditions. The Chepauk ground too will assist spin and Zampa’s role for the Super Kings would be very essential. It would be interesting if CSK buys Adam Zampa.
Lack of a fast bowler who could bowl at 145-150 kmph:
All the CSK bowlers are pretty similar in terms of pace bowling more at 130-140 kmph. To bring some variety into the attack, CSK must buy a fast bowler who could bowl at 145 clicks per hour. They also need a death bowler who could just prevent the run flow. Let us see which option CSK has in this department.
By any chance, if KKR releases Ferguson, CSK must try to fit him in their mix. He is a sensational bowler for New Zealand but hasn’t been consistent enough in the IPL. However, he could be a great asset for the Super Kings.Embed from Getty Images
With MS Dhoni’s guidance, Ferguson could possibly become CSK’s best bowler in the upcoming years. A guy capable of delivering 150 kmph consistently, Ferguson can be used both in the powerplay as well as at the death overs. Apart from bowling quick, Ferguson also has some variations in his armoury.
The Super Kings will be desperate to make a great comeback next year and if they buy some of the players to fill the gaps, then the Kings will have a great season next year. Some positives to be taken were Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form and Sam Curran’s all round display throughout the season.
They say a wounded lion is always dangerous. Likewise, can the wounded Lions make a great comeback next season? Let’s wait and see in the next year and until then cheers!
