Michael Hussey 60*(24) against Pakistan

It was the 2nd Semi-Final of the 2010 T20 World Cup between Australia and Pakistan. The Australian captain, Michael Clarke, won the toss and decided to bowl first amidst the wet outfield and the outcast conditions.

Dirk Nannes gave a brilliant start to the Aussies as he started the match with a maiden over. Things were looking bright for the Aussies but Pakistan shifted gears soon. Kamran Akmal hit Nannes for two consecutive fours in the 3rd over. The 4th over saw Akmal and Salman Butt smash Shaun Tait for three fours. Boundaries started to come in plenty. 18 runs came off the 9th over which was bowled by Watto.

Finally, Mitchell Johnson gave Australia some space to breathe as he took the wicket of the half centurion Kamran Akmal with credits to a stunning catch from Warner. By the end of the 10th over, Pakistan was in a comfortable position at 85/1.

It was Steven Smith, yes Steven Smith, who gave Australia the second breakthrough in the 12th over as Salman Butt went back to the pavilion and it was again Warner who took the catch. Australia took the wicket of Afridi in the 15th over and it looked like they recovered well from the hard-hitting of the first 10 overs but then,

Clarke conceded 14 runs in the 16th over. The 17th over was a big one too with a four and a six in the first two balls but a wicket off the last ball did some damage control. By the end of the 17th over, Pakistan was at 145/4.

Mitchell Johnson suffered the wrath of Umar Akmal in the next over. SIX! FOUR! SIX! 1, 1, SIX! 24 runs off the over! Umar Akmal completed his destructive half-century in just 29 balls.

Despite the two wickets in the last over, Pakistan had put up a hefty total of 191 runs. In the pitch report, Simon Doul had mentioned that it would be a tough pitch to bat and 140 runs would be a good score!

Unlike Pakistan who had a very good start, Australia had a dismal start as Warner was out for a duck in the first over itself. Australia recovered a bit as they smashed Abdul Razzaq for 15 runs in the 2nd over but things spiralled down quickly as Mohammad Amir struck again and the dangerous Watson had to go back to the pavilion. By the end of the 10th over, Australia was in a fragile situation at 67/4. They needed to chase 192 runs to progress to the finals and having a score of 67/4 by the end of 10 overs was the last thing they wanted.

Cameron White and David Hussey did some damage control by hitting a couple of sixes but the 5th wicket fell in the 13th over in the form of David Hussey. One Hussey was out, another Hussey came in- Michael Hussey.

Even though Michael Hussey hit Afridi for two consecutive sixes in the 16th over, the required run-rate had still shot up to 14.00. Things spiraled down further in the next two overs as the Kangaroos lost two more wickets and by the end of the 18th over, they were reeling at 158/7 needing 34 runs from the final 12 balls to become the finalists of the 2010 T20 World Cup.

19th over- FOUR! 2,2,2,2, FOUR!- 16 runs from the over.

It was the last over of the match and 18 runs were needed. Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson were the two Aussies on the pitch whereas the fate of Pakistan was in the hands of Saeed Ajmal.

Unfortunately for the Aussies, it is Mitchell Johnson who was on strike!

19.1- Johnson took a single! Relief! Mr. Cricket came on strike. 17 runs needed to win from 5 balls.

19.2- Saeed Ajmal bowled a short ball and Michael Hussey pulled and punished it for a SIX! Was the match still alive for the Aussies? 11 runs needed off 4 balls.

19.3- Michael Hussey went down on his knee and hit the ball over long-on for a SIX! Whoah! Unbelievable! Just 5 runs now needed off 3 balls. From 18 needed in 6 balls, Hussey had turned the tables around and now just 5 runs were needed off the last three balls.

19.4- FFFOOOUUURRR! Hussey, you beauty! From 18 runs needed from the last over, the score had been leveled! O’Boy, what a drama! 16 runs had come off the last three balls!

19.5- Hussey hit the ball over long-on and a humongous SIX! Four consecutive boundaries! AUSTRALIA WON! Michael Hussey did the unbelievable! Michael Hussey did the unthinkable! Australia is in utter joy while the Pakistan camp was shell shocked and wasn’t able to digest what just happened. Michael Hussey, you beauty, what a knock, remained unbeaten at 60*(24)! An absolutely majestic knock from Mr. Cricket who single-handedly won the match for his team! Australia into the finals of the 2010 T20 World Cup!
