Mumbai Indians had a successful season of IPL in 2020 and would like to continue the same in IPL 2021 too. While Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult did the major heavy lifting in bowling, none of the other pacers stood up. And this was evident in MI’s released player list. MI released the overseas pacers Mitch McClenaghan, James Pattinson, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Sherfane Rutherford. And their star pacer, Lasith Malinga too has retired.
Hence, MI’s auction strategy is evident. They would like to add more overseas pacers to the squad. And with 15.35 crores in the purse, they can do a decent job. Let us have a look at the players Mumbai Indians could target in the IPL 2021 auctions.
1. Mitchell Starc
Starc is on every team’s wishlist. As most of the experts have predicted, Starc will go for a hefty price in this year’s auctions. Although he has a tendency to get injured frequently, MI might still go for him. Seeing Boult, Bumrah and Starc bowl in tandem will be a great sight.

But given Starc’s demand in the auction, if MI purchases him, it will set them back by quite a sum and affect the other buys. So will MI bid for him?
2. Neil Wagner
Neil Wagner is another pacer whom MI might be looking out for. Most of the teams would love to have two left-arm pacers and hence Boult might enjoy bowling with his country-mate.Embed from Getty Images
Although he is prone to go for runs, Wagner has a propensity of picking wickets which MI might need. Wagner is also handy with the bat and can add a few extra runs in times of need.
3. Kyle Jamieson
2020 was Jamieson’s year. Apart from making his debut in all formats for New Zealand, he has impressed everyone too. While he might be popular for Test matches, bowling in similar line and lengths has fetched him wickets in T20s. Even his economy-rates in T20s have been impressive.Embed from Getty Images
Being tall, it gives him the extra bounce which bowling. To add to it, he can hit some decent shots as a finisher for MI too.
4. Umesh Yadav
Mumbai Indians lacks a good Indian pacer apart from Bumrah and Umesh Yadav can fill that void. Apart from being able to bowl at good speeds, Umesh has a lot of experience bowling in Indian conditions which might be handy for him. To add to it, the Wankhede wicket has often helped the pacers too.

As he was released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore this season, he would surely be raring to go and prove his worth. So will he wear the Mumbai Indians jersey, only time will tell us,
5. Arjun Tendulkar
While this might be a surprising name in the list, Arjun has spent enough time in the Mumbai Indians’ nets in the past few seasons. Apart from this, he has been playing in Wankhede for long time now.

Arjun has recently made his debut for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Although he didn’t have a great run, his bowling has definitely seen an improvement over the years. Given MI’s habit of investing in youngsters, Arjun might be a pick for MI.
