There is a message in Sanskrit inscribed on the IPL trophy which says, ‘Yatra Pratibha Avsara Prapnotihi‘. This translates to, ‘where talent meets opportunity‘. IPL 2020 has proved this to be right as we have witnessed some sensational performances from some of the most unexpected names. In this article, we will discuss one unexpected star from each team in IPL 2020.
8. Rajasthan Royals – Rahul Tewatia

In a team that boasts of T20 stars like Jos Butler, Steven Smith, Ben Stokes, Robin Uthappa, and even Sanju Samson, it is Rahul Tewatia who has stolen the limelight. Against KXIP, Sanju got out at the 1st ball of the 16th over when the score was 161/2. RR had to chase 224 runs so they were all but lost. But then came Rahul Tewatia who smashed 7 sixes which included the 30 runs off Cottrell’s over and RR won the match!
Against SRH too, RR was just in the jaws of defeat. While chasing 159 runs, RR was struggling to breathe at 78/5 but then Rahul Tewatia formed a formidable partnership with Riyan Parag and brought home the victory for RR! He has now scored 222 runs for RR this season with an SR of 145.09 and also has been the next best bowler for RR after Jofra Archer. Unexpected? For sure.
7. Chennai Super Kings – Sam Curran

CSK is a team whose average age exceeds 30 but the presence of a 22-year-old Sam Curran has been doing wonders for them.
This 22-year-old youngster has been time to time delivering both with the bat and the ball. He has scored at a mesmerizing strike rate of 180 this season. With the ball, he has been the best for CSK with 10 wickets. He now handles the responsibility of being an opener too. His youthfulness and intent have been crucial for the Men in Yellow and if he continues his fine form then CSK may even scrape to the top 4!
6. Kings XI Punjab – Mayank Agarwal

Before the IPL 2020, Mayank Agarwal was famous as one of the finest test players currently. But when it came to the shortest format of the game, nothing much was expected from him.
Fast forward to now, he has taken everyone by storm. He currently sits 2nd in the top runscorer list amassing 393 runs in 9 games that too at an SR of 159.10. He also has a great batting average of 43.66 and has broken the belief that he can only perform in Tests. Mayank has also hit a fabulous century and along with KL Rahul, he has been the vital cog for KXIP. So much has been his influence that even the universal boss is forced to come on 3rd!
5. Sunrisers Hyderabad – T. Natarajan
SRH was already going through tough times but all hell broke loose when news came that Bhuvneshwar Kumar was injured. Bhuvneshwar was the spearhead of SRH’s bowling, but now, the presence of T Natarajan has given some relief to SRH.
Natarajan has now gained fame as the ‘Yorker King’ as he can bowl those lethal yorkers at will. He instantly drew everyone’s attention when he bowled 6 consecutive yorkers in an over. He is currently ranked 10th in the top wicket-takers list with 11 wickets in 9 games. Against CSK when they defended 164 runs, T Natarajan took the wickets of the half-centurion Jadeja and the dangerous Rayudu. He is a bright prospect and let’s hope he continues delivering the toe crushing yorkers till the end.
4. Kolkata Knight Riders- Shubman Gill
The 21-year-old is roaring to attract the attention of the Indian selectors. One can say that he is certainly treading on the right path.
In a batting lineup that has Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik, Nitish Rana, and Andre Russell- it is the 21-year-old, Shubman Gill who has been the top run-scorer for KKR. He is currently 10th on the top run-scorer list with 311 runs in 9 games which includes the match-winning 70*(62) against SRH and 47(34) against RR. He has a decent batting average of 38.87 this season. Though his strike rate has raised some eyebrows, it is only a matter of time that he fixes that too. When on one side wickets have been falling like a pile of cards, he has played the anchor role beautifully.
3. Royal Challengers Bangalore – Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar- Twitter/ sundarwashi5
It was just a few months back when The Turbanator criticized the selection of Washington Sundar on the grounds that he doesn’t spin the ball. Fast forward to now, he has emerged as one of the most economical bowlers of RCB.
The economy has always been a headache for RCB. Their bowlers have always been known to be on the expensive side which meant that they would struggle to defend even big scores. Not this time! If we count only those players who have played 9 matches, then Sundar has the second-best economy of 5.89, only behind Rashid Khan. He has also been a handy option with the bat, scoring 30 against KXIP and more.
2. Mumbai Indians – Suryakumar Yadav
It is sometimes really hard to believe that a talented player like Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t yet got the chance to adorn the national jersey.
Till now he had some brilliant innings like 47 against KKR, 79 unbeaten against RCB, and 53 against DC.
Don’t think I’m brave enough to play the shots he (Suryakumar Yadav) playsQuinton de Kock on Suryakumar Yadav
He has scored 243 runs in 9 games at an impressive strike rate of 148.17. Suryakumar Yadav has been a solid number 3 option for MI. MI would hope that he only gets better as the season progress if they want to defend their title.
1. Delhi Capitals – Axar Patel
Axar Patel against CSK- Twitter/akshar2026
No brownie points for guessing this one! Axar Patel is a no-brainer and probably the most impressive of all the names on this list.
He has been amazing with the ball having a meagre economy of 5.59 which has been the 4th best as of now. He has taken 7 wickets in 8 games and his all-round performance with the ball has given the bowling unit of DC extra strength and stability. His batting potential also came to the forefront as he smashed 3 sixes in the final over against CSK to win the match for them. He has scored at a strike rate of 175 this season and DC would want nothing more from him. Taking wickets at a decent economy, scoring at an excellent pace, and winning matches for the team in IPL 2020- simply 10/10.
