Talking Points From The Match

Kieron Pollard’s 150th match for MI

Do you remember the 2010 IPL Auction? Teams like MI, CSK, RCB and KKR were involved in an intense bidding to add just one player to their arsenal- Kieron Pollard. It was MI who won at the end and since then there has been no looking back for Pollard.

Kieron Pollard reached the landmark of playing 150 matches for MI. In this journey, he amassed 2786 runs at a strike rate of 146.79 and has also bagged 50+ IPL wickets. He has won the man of the match award 10 times and he has been instrumental for MI in all their title-winning journeys. To celebrate this achievement, Pollard was presented with the MI jersey with the jersey number ‘150’ which you can see in the photo.

He performed well in the match too, giving an all-round performance by remaining unbeaten at 13*(7), scalped an important wicket of Nitish Rana and took a great catch of Shubhman Gill. MI winning the match by 49 runs and reaching top of the table for now made the day even more special for the special man.

Emergence of Shivam Mavi

Shivam Mavi is one of the most talked-about young players in the cricket fraternity and this match showed why.

On the second ball of his very first over, he took the wicket of an in-form Quinton de Kock. His first over was a wicket maiden. He tried many different variations and tried his best to tighten the flow of runs when players like Cummins was being hit all over the ground. He was the one who took the much needed wickets of both QDK and Rohit Sharma and ended the match as the best pace bowler from KKR. Who can imagine that he is just 21 years old?

KKR has paucity of quality Indian fast bowlers and Shivam Mavi’s performance yesterday is certainly a bright sign for them.

Rusty Pat Cummins

Pat Cummins had a horrendous start to the season which raised question marks over the money which KKR had splurged on him. It is although worth mentioning that his performance could also be a result of the fact that his quarantine had ended yesterday itself which made him rusty on the field.

He had a bad day with the ball and one of the best bowlers of this generation didn’t even complete his full quota of overs. In the 3 overs he bowled, he conceeded a whopping 49 runs and failed to take even a single wicket. His economy of 16.33 is the last thing he would’ve wanted, but a player of such class will surely bounce back as the tournament proceeds.

While his bowling may have been horrendous last night, his batting was a positive point for KKR. He arrived on the crease when KKR had near to nil chances of a win but he tried to reduce the margin and showed his prowess with the bat by hitting four sixes off Bumrah’s over. He ended up with 33 runs off 12 balls which included 1 four and 4 sixes.

The Pace Trio Of Mumbai Indians

When news came that Lasith Malinga had been ruled out of IPL 2020, all MI fans were in disbelief but for now, it seems that Mumbai Indians isn’t missing Malinga after all!

The pace trio of Bumrah, Boult and Pattinson performed exceptionally well today. If we exclude the over where Bumrah was thrashed by Cummins then Bumrah had conceded just 5 runs in his first three overs, taking two wickets in the process. Trent Boult had a terrific start to the match as he opened the innings with a maiden over and ended the match with figures of 4-1-30-2. James Pattinson was the most economical of the three, conceding just 25 runs in his four overs and taking two wickets. Together, they took 6 wickets in the match and are certainly looking a force to be reckoned with.

Rohit Sharma leading from the front

Last season, Rohit Sharma scored at an average of 28.92 at a mediocre strike rate of 128.57. While there is no doubt that he is one of the finest T20 players of the world, his recent performances have been far from what he is capable of. Yesterday, the hitman silenced everyone.

Rohit has always loved playing against KKR and he continued the saga this time too. He played beautifully and had a knock of 80 runs off 54 balls. Rohit also had double the number of sixes (6) than fours (3) and scored at a strike rate of 148.15. He lead from the front and KKR could take his wicket only in the 18th over. He won the man of the match award and things couldn’t have been better for him.
