IPL 2020 Post-Match Discussion: Game 11 – DC and SRH

The clash between the table-toppers and a team which lost two games on a trot was not something many people would have wanted to see. But that is the beauty of IPL, we never know which team will stun which one. As Delhi Capitals took on SunRisers Hyderabad, DC was stunned with a defeat in the hands of SRH. Let’s see how this game panned out.

Result: SRH won by 15 runs. Match Scorecard

Talking Points From This Match:

The Top-Order:

SRH which looked like a weak side in its first couple of games suddenly looked extremely strong with the inclusion of Kane Williamson. This meant sacrificing its all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, who hadn’t done anything wrong in the previous game. So, Kane had to really justify his inclusion in the team.

With Warner, Bairstow, Manish and Kane, SRH had a rock-solid top-order. And the overseas batsmen went all-guns-blazing. David Warner and Kane Williamson scored at quicker rates, while the regularly attacking batsman, Bairstow, anchored the innings. Bairstow hit a half-century while Warner and Kane scored in 40s. Something worth mentioning is the running between the wickets of Bairstow-Warner and Bairstow-Kane.

The Lone Star:

DC didn’t bowl as well as it wanted to. While Ishant, Nortje, Stoinis and Axar couldn’t pick any wickets, Mishra picked wickets but leaked too many runs.

Its only commendable bowler was Kagiso Rabada who had a spell of 2/21 and bowled some unplayable deliveries. Rabada also took a catch and scored 15 runs off 7 balls. Phew! A busy day!

The Batting that never took off:

The star-studded DC batting line-up faltered big time. With only 163 runs for victory, DC did have an upper-hand at the start of the second innings. But none of its batsmen firing off meant troubles for it.

It all started with Prithvi Shaw who returned in just the first over. Then returned Shreyas Iyer having scored 17 runs in 21 balls. Shikhar Dhawan too returned immediately while the big-hitting duo of Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer too couldn’t do much. Their final hope, Marcus Stoinis, who played a powerful knock in DC’s first game too failed.

DC’s batting never took off in the entire innings, which is something to be looked at immediately.

Back to the Winning Ways:

Historically, the biggest strength of SRH has been its bowling which has snatched some impossible games from the jaws of defeat. And this bowling attack’s failure meant a bad start to the 2020 IPL campaign for SRH. But, in this match, SRH’s bowling was back to its winning ways.

The star-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave them a good start by picking a wicket in the first over itself. He also choked the batsmen and never really let them take off. He was ably supported by fellow pacer Natarajan who was extremely impressive in bowling perfect yorkers, much to everyone’s delight.

Abhishek Sharma, who had a bigger responsibility as Nabi wasn’t playing, bowled with a lot of discipline. Barring the two sixes he had given in his last over, he went wrong no where.

But the biggest star of the day was Rashid Khan who was at his best. He never let the batsmen get the better of him and conceded only 14 runs in 4 overs picking the crucial wickets of Dhawan, Pant and Iyer.

David Warner was very skillful in rotating his bowlers and never letting the DC batsmen settle down. The SRH bowlers bowled 47 dot-balls in this innings.

Questions to be answered:
  • Will SRH continue the strategy of playing Kane in place of Nabi in the later games too, given that this might weaken their bowling?
  • Will Khaleel Ahmed get another chance, given that he gave away many runs in the two matches he played?
  • Will Shikhar Dhawan, who has been playing at low strike-rates get another turn?

Overall, it was a good comeback for the Orange Army. But will it be able to keep this momentum? And will DC be able to get back to its winning ways? We have to stay tuned to this tournament for that!
